Deutsche Bahn to Close Key Hamburg Rail Node for Five‑Week Upgrade

The company says bundling the work will speed renewals and reduce total future disruption to the network.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn and its InfraGO unit announced a concentrated work window running from mid‑July to 20 August to replace the century‑old Sternbrücke and complete three other major infrastructure projects.
  • The plan will force wide service changes with S‑Bahn trains stopped between Sternschanze and Altona for about five weeks and long‑distance stops at Altona and Dammtor suspended for parts of the period.
  • Regional and long‑distance services from Schleswig‑Holstein will be sharply cut or rerouted, with routes such as KielHamburg reduced to only a few train pairs and many trains terminating or turning at Pinneberg.
  • Pinneberg will be the main transfer hub and will receive extra staff, denser S‑Bahn weekend frequencies and replacement buses, while Schleswig‑Holstein demands additional measures including special cruise‑link trains and direct buses for Kiel passengers.
  • Hamburg will close large road sections from late June, install special traffic signals and physical controls to protect neighbourhoods, and warns that single‑track constraints and follow‑on works could extend rail and street impacts into September.
