Deutsche Bahn Scraps Family Seat Reservations and Hikes Fees

Transport groups warn the June 15 policy will double costs for families, making train travel less attractive compared with cars.

Overview

  • From June 15, Deutsche Bahn will end its €10.40 flat-rate family reservation and require each passenger to pay individually for a seat reservation
  • Seat reservation fees will rise to €5.50 in second class and €6.90 in first class, marking a 30-cent increase over current rates
  • A family of two adults and two children now faces a one-way reservation cost of €22, compared with €10.40 under the previous scheme
  • The ecological transport club VCD and passenger association Pro Bahn say the change amounts to a hidden fare increase that could push families back to driving
  • About 5% of long-distance travelers—around 6.7 million passengers in 2024—used the family option, making this move part of Deutsche Bahn’s broader trend of price adjustments
