Deutsche Bahn Resumes Gigabit 5G Trials With Lab ICE and 13 New Masts

A diesel-electric ICE on the Karow–Malchow track is testing whether 3.6 GHz combined with lower frequencies can sustain gigabit-class 5G speeds in train travel.

Overview

  • The GINT XT pilot, slated to run through the end of 2025, unites Deutsche Bahn with the four major mobile operators and partners Ericsson and Vantage Towers.
  • Measurement runs have resumed on the Karow–Malchow track after Deutsche Bahn upgraded its test infrastructure.
  • A diesel-electric ICE equipped with signal-permeable windows and rooftop antenna mounts is conducting trials at speeds up to 140 km/h.
  • The tests aim to deliver download speeds as high as 1,000 Mbps to assess gigabit-class 5G performance on trains.
  • Preparations are under way on the HamburgBerlin corridor to install FRMCS-compatible masts that will also support future gigabit passenger connectivity.
