Deutsche Bahn Finalizes Preparations for HamburgBerlin Rail Overhaul

All contracts have been awarded for the nine-month closure starting August 2025, with the project on schedule and within budget.

Overview

  • The HamburgBerlin rail line will close from August 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, for a comprehensive modernization project.
  • Deutsche Bahn has awarded all remaining contracts, ensuring the project remains on time and within its allocated budget.
  • Long-distance trains will be rerouted via Uelzen and Stendal, adding approximately 45 minutes to travel times, while up to 170 buses will support regional services.
  • The overhaul includes track, switch, and signaling renewals, as well as station upgrades to improve accessibility.
  • This project is part of Deutsche Bahn's €40 billion initiative to modernize over 40 high-traffic rail corridors by 2030, following the successful Riedbahn renovation in 2024.
