Deutsche Bahn Drops Plan to Deepen Dachau’s Ostenstraße Underpass

The move removes the prospect of long closures for residents, focusing negotiations on a temporary Freisinger Straße diversion.

Overview

  • City officials said on Tuesday that Deutsche Bahn/DB InfraGo will not pursue the Tieflegung (deepening) of the Ostenstraße railway underpass.
  • DB told the city that on‑site inspections revealed difficult soil conditions and complex water‑management and high‑water risks, which it cited as the reason for stopping the plan.
  • The city and the Bürgerinitiative 'Zukunft Ostenstraße' welcomed the decision and are advancing talks about a temporary Behelfsumfahrung at Freisinger Straße to keep heavy detour traffic out of the residential Ostenstraße.
  • DB had previously rejected a temporary bypass for cost reasons and because of complicated stellwerk (signalling) work, so upcoming technical meetings will focus on design, cost allocation and operational constraints.
  • The long‑standing 2014 Ostumfahrung decision remains on the books but has been delayed by the Staatliches Bauamt Freising’s lack of planning staff and by state prioritisation rules that factor local 'Projektakzeptanz', a dynamic that also shapes plans for the MD‑Papierfabrik redevelopment.
