Deutsche Bahn Breaks Ground on Nordmainische S-Bahn North of Frankfurt

Preparatory work is underway after securing federal, state, local funding for the €2 billion rail link ahead of Hanau’s final approval.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn and Hesse officials held the June 30 groundbreaking to launch the €2 billion Nordmainische S-Bahn project.
  • Preparatory works under way include replacing a rail bridge in Hanau following an initial May 2023 overpass upgrade.
  • The line will run from Hanau via Maintal to Frankfurt north of the Main to separate regional and long-distance traffic through the central hub.
  • Construction calls for 20 km of new tracks, two stations at Frankfurt-Ost (tief) and Frankfurt-Fechenheim, and a 1.4 km twin-tube tunnel under Konstablerwache.
  • Trains are planned every 15 minutes during peak hours and full service is expected in the early 2030s under the integrated Deutschlandtakt timetable.
