Deutsche Bahn Begins Summer Closures for Major Rail Upgrades

Replacement buses alongside long-distance diversions mark the ZeithainLeckwitz shutdown, with DB InfraGO readying August closures, a €330 million junction upgrade

Overview

  • The ZeithainLeckwitz section on the DresdenLeipzig line closed on July 21 for track-safety integration and will remain shut until July 25 with long-distance trains diverted and regional services on replacement buses.
  • From August 1 to 18, the MunichSalzburg (RosenheimSalzburg) and MunichKufstein lines will undergo full closures to renew overhead lines and rails, with Bayerische Regiobahn running section-wise bus replacement services for local passengers.
  • The Sachsen–Franken–Magistrale between Altenburg and Werdau will be completely closed from August 8 at 22:00 to October 26 at 04:00, with replacement buses covering S5/S5X, RE1, RE3 and RB37 lines during extensive track renewal works.
  • Deutsche Bahn is investing about €330 million in modernizing the Gößnitz rail junction and adjacent stretches by 2026, installing new tracks, platforms, bridges, overhead lines and signaling to boost capacity and speed.
  • These phased summer shutdowns are part of DB’s nationwide plan to modernize 41 high-traffic corridors by 2030 and set the stage for a full general renovation of the MunichRosenheimSalzburg corridor in 2027.
