Deutsche Bahn Bans Alcohol at All Its Stations

The company says the network-wide rule aims to curb alcohol-related violence and will be enforced under its house-rights through security checks and expulsions.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn will prohibit alcohol consumption at about 5,400 DB-managed stations starting Thursday, October 15, covering platforms, halls and other areas that fall under its house rights.
  • The ban exempts station restaurants and bars, allows sealed alcoholic beverages to be carried in luggage, and does not stop onboard long-distance train gastronomy from selling alcohol.
  • DB will rely on security staff, place bans and repeat offender house bans to enforce the rule and is adding measures such as bodycams to protect employees.
  • Unions and police groups have welcomed the step but warned that measurable drops in violence and litter will depend on consistent enforcement and sufficient staffing.
  • The policy follows a phased rollout since spring 2026, when pilot bans at roughly 30 stations produced reports of less violence and waste, and regional transport authorities may still set different rules for local services.
