Detroit's Open Mayoral Race Enters Final Week With Sheffield Holding Clear Edge

Early ballots have topped 45,000 ahead of Detroit choosing Mike Duggan's successor.

  • Campaign finance reports through Oct. 19 show Sheffield spending over $1.8 million with about $772,000 cash on hand, compared with Kinloch's roughly $160,000 spent and under $11,000 remaining.
  • The winner will inherit a city with budget surpluses, lower violent crime and two years of population growth, yet persistent gaps in affordable housing and racial economic disparities.
  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Michigan allows same-day voter registration, and the Associated Press will call the race only once a comeback is mathematically implausible, with recounts available by request.
