Detroit Violent Crime Falls to New Low in 2025 as Q3 Data Show 15%–30% Declines

Leaders seek more federal help to sustain the gains.

Overview

  • City data through Sept. 30 show 132 homicides this year versus 155 at the same point in 2024, with homicides, nonfatal shootings and carjackings each down roughly 15%–30%.
  • Compared with 2022, homicides are down 41%, nonfatal shootings have been cut roughly in half and carjackings are down 67%, following 203 homicides for all of 2024.
  • Officials credit coordinated partnerships across city, county, state and federal agencies, use of Project Green Light and ShotSpotter, a police command center and precinct-embedded prosecutors.
  • Nonfatal shooting case closures rose to more than 70% in 2024 after embedding assistant county prosecutors, and the city is expanding Community Violence Intervention zones with new state funding.
  • Mayor Mike Duggan welcomed stepped-up ATF, U.S. Attorney and DEA involvement and requested more resources, while a fatal daylight shooting of a 14-year-old underscored persistent hotspots.
