Detroit Tree Lighting Set for Friday With Tight Curfews, No-Unaccompanied-Minors Rule

Police pledge strict curfew enforcement with adult-supervision requirements to deter youth violence.

Overview

  • Downtown Detroit hosts the 22nd annual lighting at Campus Martius from 4–9 p.m., featuring BRELAND, Natalie Jane and Olympic-level ice performances led by Polina Edmunds, with The Rink opening Saturday.
  • Detroit police will bar unaccompanied minors from the event footprint and enforce curfews of 8 p.m. for ages 15 and under and 11 p.m. for 16–17, with possible $250 parental-responsibility tickets.
  • Streets closed 6 a.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Saturday include Michigan Ave. and Fort between Woodward and Griswold, plus sections of Woodward, Monroe and Cadillac Square.
  • The footprint is designated gun-free with no alcohol, and prohibited items include weapons, drones, backpacks, outside food and professional recording gear under a published code of conduct.
  • Capacity limits may prompt gate closures, visitors are urged to arrive early or take the QLINE, and community groups will join police to promote nonviolence and keep crowds calm.
