Detroit Lions Sign CFL Star Mathieu Betts to Strengthen Defense

Mathieu Betts, celebrated for his record-breaking performance in the CFL, joins the Lions to enhance their pass rush capabilities.

The Detroit Lions have signed Mathieu Betts, the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the 2023 season, to a reserve/futures contract.
Betts, a defensive lineman, recorded a league-best 18 sacks in 18 games last season with the B.C. Lions, setting a new record for sacks by a Canadian-born player.
The signing aims to bolster the Lions' pass rush, which ranked 22nd in the NFL in sack rate this season.
Betts had offers from both NFL and CFL teams but chose Detroit for its fit and the opportunity to make his way in the NFL.
Betts played for the Edmonton Eskimos and BC Lions in the CFL, and had a brief stint with the Chicago Bears in 2019.
