Detroit Debuts First Wireless EV Charging Roadway in the US
Electreon and Michigan Department of Transportation launch a five-year pilot project to test and refine the technology.
- Michigan has installed the first wireless EV charging public roadway in the US, located in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood.
- The technology, provided by Electreon, uses inductive-charging copper coils installed beneath the road's surface to charge EVs as they drive over the road.
- The pilot project will test and refine the wireless charging technology in a real-world environment, with plans to open it to the public in the next few years.
- Electreon and the Michigan Department of Transportation have committed to a five-year development and pilot of the electric road system on Michigan roads.
- Electreon has also installed two static inductive charging stations in front of the Michigan Central Station, which can charge Electreon-equipped vehicles while parked.
