Detroit Automakers Plan New Electric and Gas Vehicles After UAW Strikes End

Under new contracts ending six-week UAW strikes, plans include a mix of electric and gas vehicles designed to preserve jobs, boost pay, improve job security and align with transition goals for half of all U.S sales to be electric vehicles by 2030.

  • The Detroit automakers - Stellantis, Ford, and General Motors - have devised production plans for a mix of new gas and electric vehicles as part of their tentative contracts concluding the United Auto Workers' six-week strike.
  • The contracts, which will remain in effect through April 2028, promise significant pay raises, better benefits, and enhanced job security for about 146,000 union members who will vote on them in the coming weeks.
  • Stellantis plans to build a new midsize pickup truck and battery-operated versions of six current models, with a new electric battery factory pledged in Belvidere, Illinois, creating 1,300 jobs.
  • Ford has committed to an $8.1 billion investment during the contract term, aiming to manufacture at least three new electric vehicles and gas-electric hybrid versions of the Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs, amongst others.
  • General Motors plans to introduce at least six new electric vehicles, including a full-sized SUV, across factories in Detroit, Tennessee, Kansas, and Michigan, partnering with other companies for some productions.
