Detention of Wall Street Journal Reporter in Russia Extended

Evan Gershkovich, Accused of Espionage, to Remain in Custody Until January 30, 2024

Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has had his detention in Russia extended until January 30, 2024.
Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023 on espionage charges while on a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
Both Gershkovich and the Wall Street Journal deny the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained.
This is the first time an American reporter has been charged with espionage in Russia since 1986.
Analysts suggest that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips amid heightened U.S.-Russian tensions.
