Destatis: Germany’s Alcohol Prices 14% Below EU Average in October 2025

The statistics provide public-health context by showing affordability alongside a downward consumption trend.

Overview

  • Official data show Germany’s retail alcohol prices were 14% under the EU average, with only Italy cheaper at 19% below.
  • Finland recorded the highest alcohol price level in the EU at 110% above the average, while Denmark, Belgium and Poland were also higher-priced and Czechia and Austria were lower.
  • Germany’s non-alcoholic beverages were priced about 2% above the EU average, with Latvia the most expensive at 46% higher, partly attributed to a sugar tax.
  • WHO figures cited by Destatis place Germany’s 2022 consumption at 11.2 liters of pure alcohol per person aged 15 and over, down from 12.1 liters in 2012.
  • Germany ranked ninth for per-capita consumption alongside France and Portugal, and the release was framed around Dry January’s focus on health and behavior.
