DeSantis Calls for Omar's Expulsion and Deportation Following Controversial Speech
Omar vows to protect Somali interests in US Congress, sparking backlash and calls for her removal.
- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar to be expelled from Congress and deported from the United States, following a speech she gave in Somali to a gathering of community leaders in Minneapolis.
- In her speech, Omar declared that as long as she is in the US Congress, she will protect the interests of Somalia and that the US government will only do what Somalians in the US tell them to do.
- Omar also rallied against plans by the Ethiopian government to enter a sea access deal with the Republic of Somaliland and stated that America will 'liberate the occupied territories' of Djibouti, Somaliland, and Kenya’s North Eastern Province.
- Omar has disputed the translation of her speech and insisted her remarks were misinterpreted, stating that she stands in solidarity with Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora.
- Omar, the first Somali American in Congress, was born in Mogadishu and became a US citizen in 2000. She is one of two Muslim women lawmakers in the House of Representatives.
