Overview
- Covering only the face doesn’t prevent damage since body tanning still triggers facial pigmentation and raises melanoma risk.
- After-sun lotions serve only as moisturizers and cooling agents and cannot reverse UV-induced cellular damage.
- Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher must be applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure, reapplied every two hours and used on all exposed areas including ears, neck and décolletage.
- Seeking shade during peak UV hours and wearing protective clothing such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and cotton garments enhance sun protection.
- Chlorine, salt water, sweat and air conditioning can stress skin integrity and should be followed by cool baths and hydrating creams with aloe vera or vitamin E.
