Overview

  • On July 22, Thompson delivered his final three race calls at Wolverhampton, concluding a 60-year career that began with a point-to-point at age 15.
  • Wolverhampton Racecourse named the It’s A Photo – Big Fella EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes and the Thanks For Everything Tommo – Happy Retirement Handicap in his honour and staged a presentation alongside jockeys.
  • Thompson held back tears on his last broadcast as he received messages of support from racing figures including Nicky Henderson, Frankie Dettori and William Buick.
  • As part of his send-off, he reunited with Robert Cooper and Matthew Jones, the participants in his viral “I see you’ve been joined by a beautiful lady” clip.
  • Thompson confirmed that, despite retiring from commentary, he will remain on course as a raceday presenter to keep his distinctive voice in the sport.
