Derek Carr Joins UCLA as Special Adviser

Overview

• Derek Carr, whom UCLA announced Monday, has joined the Bruins as a volunteer special adviser to head coach Bob Chesney.
• UCLA says Carr will help the offensive staff with game-planning strategy and work directly with the team’s quarterbacks.
• Carr retired in May 2025 after doctors found a labral tear and degenerative changes in his right shoulder and has said he will not return as a player.
• The hire was aided by Carr’s Fresno State ties to UCLA general manager Darrick Yray and is expected to be a resource for starter Nico Iamaleava.
• This is Carr’s first formal coaching role and it gives UCLA an NFL veteran on staff as Chesney begins a program rebuild; the Saints still retain contractual rights from his playing deal.
