Derby Fire Surges to 1,720 Acres, Forces Evacuations as Lee Blaze Reaches 73% Containment

Mandatory evacuations follow rapid growth in remote terrain with expanded land closures.

Overview

  • The lightning-sparked Derby fire in White River National Forest grew to about 1,720 acres with 0% containment after doubling again Wednesday night.
  • Residents along Sweetwater Road and sections of Colorado River Road from Sweetwater to Red Dirt Creek were ordered to evacuate, with an evacuation center open in Dotsero.
  • Closures now include portions of the White River National Forest in Eagle and Garfield counties, and BLM lands north and west of Gypsum and south of Derby Creek.
  • The Lee fire near Meeker stands at roughly 137,755 acres and is 73% contained, remaining among Colorado’s largest wildfires on record.
  • Stoner Mesa reached 9,673 acres at 23% containment and Crosho held at 2,067 acres at 25% containment as total Western Slope fire acreage tops 165,000, with an incident team and about 80 personnel, engines and a helicopter assigned to Derby under a forecast of possible erratic winds.
