Deputy Kills Knife-Wielding Suspect After Random Garage Stabbing

Footage will inform the Sacramento County District Attorney’s independent review of the deputy’s response.

Overview

  • The attack began July 15 when a man carrying a kitchen knife disturbed employees at a Sacramento Starbucks then ran into a Foothill Farms neighborhood and entered an open garage where he attacked a 63-year-old mother and her 26-year-old daughter.
  • The daughter pushed the attacker off her mother but was then assaulted herself and both women were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
  • An arriving Sacramento County deputy witnessed the assault, fired multiple rounds as the suspect continued stabbing, and fire personnel later pronounced the 23-year-old suspect dead at the scene.
  • The sheriff’s office has released home security, dashcam and bodycam footage showing the suspect’s flight from the store, the garage attack, deputies’ arrival, and the shooting.
  • The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division are investigating and the county District Attorney will conduct an independent review while officials say investigators will examine factors such as homelessness, mental health or drugs as they probe the randomness of the attack.
