Deputy Killed in Vero Beach Eviction Shooting as Suspect and Locksmith Critically Wounded

State investigators are reviewing how a routine eviction turned violent.

Overview

  • Indian River County Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, a 25-year veteran, was fatally shot while deputies and a locksmith entered a Bermuda Club residence to serve an eviction.
  • Deputy Florentino “Tino” Arispe was shot in the shoulder and is recovering at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, and an on-scene locksmith remains in critical condition after surgery.
  • Suspect Michael Halberstam was shot by deputies, struck multiple times, and is in surgery in critical condition after allegedly opening fire in the entryway.
  • Sheriff Eric Flowers said the eviction was requested by Halberstam’s mother and noted seven calls to the home this month, as well as concerning social-media posts tied to the suspect.
  • FDLE is assisting the active investigation, which includes determining whether Mashkow fired her weapon, as officials and agencies across Florida issued condolences for the county’s second-ever line-of-duty death.
