Deputy and Resident Use Raft to Rescue Man From Flash Flood in Green River

Officials credit rapid coordination with a resident-supplied raft for a safe pullout that left the patient recovering.

Overview

  • Emery County dispatch received a call just after 4 p.m. Saturday about a person trapped in a wash off Airport Road on Green River’s south side.
  • Deputy Josh Opp requested reinforcements as responders assembled rope gear, the Green River Fire Department, and city public works support.
  • Public works positioned a front-end loader as an anchor while Opp and local resident Kent Nelson paddled a raft to the stranded man and secured a life jacket.
  • Crews on shore pulled the raft to safety, and the man—who is not from the area—was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
  • The sheriff’s office praised Green River citizens as well as Utah Highway Patrol and Classic Air Medical, noting there are no ongoing rescue operations related to the incident.
