Overview
- Timothy Schulz, 42, swam through a lake known to harbor alligators and suffered a bite to his right arm before walking into a residential area armed with garden shears.
- After deputies arrived, they deployed a Taser twice without effect as Schulz charged at them, then climbed into their patrol vehicle and attempted to grab a long gun.
- Two deputies, one a trainee, opened fire and fatally wounded Schulz when he tried to access their firearm from the passenger seat.
- Sheriff Grady Judd said Schulz had a lengthy history of methamphetamine abuse and had been released from custody on May 20 following a drug possession arrest.
- The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has launched an internal investigation and the State Attorney’s office will conduct an independent review of the use of force.
