DePaul Lays Off 114 Staff to Close Budget Gap

A steep decline in international enrollment coupled with rising costs drove a $12.6 million fiscal 2026 shortfall.

Overview

  • University leaders said 114 positions were cut on Friday, equal to roughly 7%–7.6% of DePaul’s 1,493 full- and part-time staff.
  • DePaul targets $27.4 million in total reductions to reach a 2.5% operating margin, with about $11.4 million from freezes and pay cuts and roughly $16 million from layoffs and operating trims.
  • Officials cited 755 fewer international students year over year and a nearly 62% drop in new international graduate enrollment as major sources of lost tuition revenue.
  • Affected employees will receive severance based on years of service, career counseling, health insurance subsidies and other support.
  • The Loop Library sustained staff reductions but remains open this academic year with reduced hours, and the university is launching the Designing DePaul plan to build new revenue streams.
