Dense Fog Disrupts North and East India Travel as Airlines Cancel Flights and Delhi Airport Activates Low-Visibility Procedures

Low-visibility rules under the DGCA’s winter fog window are guiding flight schedules and crew deployment.

Overview

  • IndiGo cancelled 57 flights on Saturday and 13 more on Sunday, mostly citing forecasted bad weather, with two Sunday cancellations for operational reasons.
  • Delhi’s airport said low-visibility procedures were in effect early Sunday and advised passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport.
  • Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet issued advisories warning of delays, diversions or cancellations, flagging risk at cities including Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Varanasi, Patna, Guwahati and Bagdogra.
  • The IMD reported dense fog across parts of the north and east, while CPCB readings showed poor to very poor air quality in Delhi, further reducing visibility.
  • Rail officials reported more than four dozen trains running late and some diversions as operators reduced speeds for safety in fog-hit corridors.
