Dense Fog Advisory Extended to Monday for I-5 Grapevine as Freezing Fog Threatens North Alabama

The alerts target brief morning and overnight windows with quarter-mile visibility, where supercooled droplets can quickly create hazardous travel.

Overview

  • NWS Hanford issued a new dense fog advisory at 6:23 p.m. Sunday for the I-5 Grapevine and surrounding foothills, in effect until 11 a.m. Monday.
  • Visibility is expected to drop to a quarter mile or less at elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 feet, including areas such as Tehachapi and the Frazier Mountain communities.
  • A separate freezing fog advisory in north Alabama ran through 9 a.m. Sunday for Madison, Marshall, Jackson and DeKalb counties.
  • Forecasters said the freezing fog was most widespread in the Tennessee River, Paint Rock and Big Wills valleys and around Lake Guntersville, with potential for rime and black ice.
  • The National Weather Service urges drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, leave extra space, and, if visibility nears zero, activate hazards and pull into a safe location to stop.
