Dense Fog Advisories for I-5 Grapevine and L.A.-Area Coasts Through Saturday Morning

Forecasters urge low-beam headlights with slower speeds to reduce crash risk.

Overview

  • NWS Hanford issued a dense fog advisory for the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine until 11 a.m. Saturday, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less at elevations between 1,000 and 2,500 feet.
  • NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard posted a separate advisory until 10 a.m. for the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the inland Central Coast areas of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, warning of quarter-mile visibility or less.
  • Officials caution that sudden pockets of low visibility can create hazardous driving conditions, especially on mountain and foothill routes.
  • Impacted corridors include Interstate 5 and select mountain highways such as 41, 58, 152, 168 and 198, along with listed foothill communities and West Side mountains.
  • Safety guidance from the NWS emphasizes using low-beam headlights or fog lights, avoiding high beams, keeping greater following distance and pulling over safely with hazard lights if visibility drops to near zero.
