Denmark Opens EU’s First Full-Scale Offshore CO2 Storage Site

The facility establishes a truck-to-ship supply chain to inject liquefied biogenic CO2 into a depleted North Sea field, positioning Europe to scale permanent carbon storage.

  • King Frederik X formally opened the Greensand commercial site at Port Esbjerg on September 18, 2026, and project partners declared the facility in commercial operation.
  • The first commercial phase targets storing about 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year with partners saying the project can be expanded toward 4–8 million tonnes annually at full build‑out.
  • INEOS Energy operates the project with Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund after a final investment decision in December 2024 and Denmark’s regulatory approval for full‑scale storage in December 2025.
