Denmark Labels Drone Incursions Hybrid Attacks as Aalborg Airport Shuts Again

Investigators have not named a culprit but are examining a nearby Russian landing ship that operated with its tracking switched off.

Overview

  • Overnight, airspace at Aalborg was closed from 23:40 to 00:35 local time, with one Amsterdam flight turning back and a Copenhagen flight canceled, while police said the drone sighting was not yet confirmed.
  • Earlier in the week, large drones disrupted Copenhagen and were reported over Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sønderborg and the Skrydstrup air base, prompting temporary closures but, according to the defence minister, no direct military threat.
  • The head of military intelligence said there is no evidence yet identifying the operators, and the domestic intelligence chief warned the pattern resembles hybrid warfare and noted an increased risk of Russian sabotage.
  • A new lead is under scrutiny after reports that the Russian landing ship Aleksandr Shabalin was near Langeland with its transponder off as a possible connection is probed, which Moscow denies as groundless.
  • The government plans to procure drone detection and neutralization tools and propose legal authority for critical infrastructure to engage drones, as NATO partners—including France—offer support and Germany’s foreign minister signals readiness for a flexible NATO response.
