Denmark Ends State Letter Delivery as Year Closes

A 90% collapse in mail volumes under a digital-by-default public sector made the service unsustainable.

Overview

  • Public household letter deliveries conclude at year-end, closing a centuries-long chapter for the state operator PostNord.
  • The Transport Ministry has designated private carrier Dao to distribute letters arriving from abroad within Denmark starting 1 January 2026.
  • Street mailboxes are being removed nationwide and stamp sales stopped on 18 December, with many iconic red boxes sold out or headed for charity auctions.
  • Regulator comparisons show Dao faster and slightly cheaper than PostNord, with about 1,500 drop-off shops and a domestic letter price near €3.10.
  • Senior and rural advocates warn that digitally excluded residents could be left behind under the 2014 Digital Post regime, which exempts roughly 300,000 people.
