Denmark Ends Public Letter Delivery as Street Mailboxes Are Removed

A dramatic fall in letter volumes tied to pervasive digital government made the service uneconomic.

Overview

  • The last public letters are being delivered this week, with all red street mailboxes set to vanish by year-end and stamp sales already halted since December 18.
  • From January 1, 2026, private carrier Dao will handle letters arriving from abroad and provides domestic letter services at lower prices with optional home pickup.
  • State operator Postnord is exiting routine letter delivery to concentrate on parcels, a pivot linked to about 1,500 job cuts announced earlier in the year.
  • Roughly 1,000 of the approximately 1,500 public mailboxes were sold online within days, with proceeds earmarked for charity.
  • Public pushback has been limited, while Germany says its market differs and expects to continue nationwide letter delivery for years.
