Denmark Ends Public Letter Delivery as PostNord Hands Off to Dao

A private network replaces historic red boxes following a decades-long collapse in letter sending.

Overview

  • PostNord delivered its last letters at the end of 2025, with private operator Dao now handling collection and distribution and taking on delivery staff.
  • Denmark becomes the first country in Europe where the national postal operator no longer delivers letters, after volumes fell by more than 90% since 2000.
  • PostNord is removing its iconic red mailboxes, donating 1,200 to Danmarks Indsamling, selling 1,000 via retailer Fotex, and auctioning about 200 in January, while Dao has installed 1,500 new red boxes at its service centres.
  • The restructuring eliminates roughly one third of PostNord’s workforce, about 1,500 jobs, as the company refocuses on parcels.
  • France is taking a different path as La Poste remains the universal-service provider through 2035, continues six‑day rounds, raises postage and parcel prices by an average 7.4% from January 1, and receives about €500 million a year in state support.
