Overview
- Crews have begun tearing down the mall’s food court in the east wing and drone video shows large sections already removed, with Realco Recycling contracted to perform the work.
- The city approved the east wing demolition in August and the current phase focuses on roughly 11 acres near Atlantic Boulevard and Monument Road where roads, utilities and commercial outparcels will be prepared.
- District 1 Councilman Ken Amaro said demolition is expected to run about six to eight months and some new construction could appear within roughly 18 months.
- The project’s current phase excludes the former JCPenney building, which is expected to remain for renovation, the Impact Church property, and the mall’s west wing.
- Regency Square opened in 1967 and after decades of decline the 77-acre site accumulated nearly $2 million in code fines before Blackwater bought most of the property last year for just over $19 million, a sale officials say could revive the commercial corridor and bring jobs and new services to local residents.
