Demolition Resumes at Silsako Beel with Cooperative Management Institute Razed

Officials plan to clear remaining institutions before monsoon ends to begin excavating an expanded reservoir in the dry season

Silsako

Overview

  • Bulldozers returned to VIP Road on June 3 to raze the Institute of Cooperative Management under the GMDA’s Silsako Beel expansion drive.
  • The Institute of Hotel Management, Ginger Hotel and other structures are slated for demolition in the coming weeks with temporary relocation sites arranged in Rehabari and Sonapur.
  • Authorities expect to complete the removal of all constructions by the end of the monsoon season and then start excavation work during the dry months to increase floodwater storage capacity.
  • Compensation packages of ₹10 lakh for RCC buildings, ₹5 lakh for Assam-type houses and ₹1 lakh for kutcha houses have been offered, but rights groups report around 200 to 300 evictees still await payment.
  • Once finished, the expanded reservoir will reclaim nearly 800 bighas of wetland to hold excess stormwater and channel it gradually into the Brahmaputra via the Bondajan outlet.
