Democrats Hit Lowest Favorability in Three Decades as Voters Turn to GOP on Major Issues

The slump highlights a branding crisis rooted in economic messaging failures that have alienated working-class voters.

Overview

  • The Wall Street Journal survey of 1,500 registered voters, conducted July 16–20 by landline and cellphone, records Democrats at 33% favorable/63% unfavorable (net –30) with a ±2.5% margin of error, their lowest rating since 1990.
  • Republicans lead Democrats on handling the economy, inflation, tariffs, foreign policy and immigration, while Democrats only hold an advantage on healthcare and vaccine policy.
  • President Trump’s approval remains at about 46% approve/52% disapprove, roughly in line with earlier polling this year.
  • On a generic congressional ballot, voters would back Democrats 46% to 43%, a slimmer edge than at similar points in past midterm cycles.
  • Pollster John Anzalone warns that without a coherent economic agenda and stronger ties to working-class voters, the Democratic brand may struggle to recover.
