Democrat Eric Gisler Flips Deep-Red Georgia Seat, Rebukes Republicans After Surprise Win

  • The CNN Decision Desk projected Gisler defeated Republican Mack "Dutch" Guest to win House District 121 near Athens, flipping a GOP-held seat.
  • Unofficial returns showed 5,873 votes for Gisler to 5,676 for Guest (50.9% to 49.2%), with a few provisional ballots still to be resolved, according to the secretary of state's office.
  • The district supported President Donald Trump by about 12 points in 2024 and was vacated after Republican Marcus Wiedower resigned in late October.
  • Republicans will keep their Georgia House majority, which is expected to narrow to 99–81 when lawmakers reconvene in January, the Associated Press reported.
  • The pickup adds to Democrats’ recent state-level gains, including two Georgia Public Service Commission victories and numerous legislative flips in other states.
