Delhi’s Sewage Treatment Shortfall Leaves 641 MLD Flowing Into Yamuna

Overview

  • Delhi still discharges 641 million litres of untreated sewage daily into the Yamuna despite ₹1,951.03 crore spent on nine Namami Gange projects
  • The city generates 3,596 MLD of wastewater but its 37 treatment plants have a combined capacity of 3,474 MLD and treated only 2,955 MLD as of June
  • Only 2,014 MLD of treated effluent from 23 plants meets Delhi Pollution Control Committee standards, leaving 14 plants non-compliant
  • Central Pollution Control Board tests from January to June recorded BOD and faecal coliform levels far above safety thresholds at Palla, Nizamuddin, Okhla Barrage and worst of all at Asgarpur
  • Since January, authorities have allocated ₹140 crore for Yamuna cleaning and utilised ₹108.31 crore to date
