Delhi’s Monsoon Preparedness Passes First Major Rain Test

Officials say the early showers show pre-monsoon drainage work has limited widespread flooding.

Overview

  • The heavy rains that hit Delhi on Thursday tested the city’s systems, with the India Meteorological Department recording 72.6 mm of rain in 24 hours.
  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi reported removing 180,595 metric tonnes of silt from 793 major drains as part of a targeted desilting drive completed before the first showers.
  • Authorities deployed large-scale pumping capacity, including 754 permanent pumps at 167 sites and roughly 300 temporary pumps, and staffed pumping stations to clear standing water.
  • City control rooms and zonal command centres activated 24x7 monitoring with 179 CCTV feeds and a helpline that logged about 120 complaints, and most calls were attended to within 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Major arteries and key underpasses largely remained open but localized waterlogging was reported in spots such as Vikas Marg, New Delhi Railway Station, Munirka, Sadar Bazar and Dwarka, and officials say agencies will stay on high alert for the season ahead.
