Delhi’s Air Turns Severe as Fog Slashes Visibility and Disrupts Flights

Authorities enforced GRAP‑IV curbs with forecasts pointing to several more days of poor to very poor air.

Overview

  • Delhi’s 24‑hour average AQI rose to 412 at 4 pm, up from 373 a day earlier, placing the city in the severe category, CPCB data showed.
  • Five monitoring sites crossed 450 on the SAMEER app — Nehru Nagar (465), Mundka (457), Chandni Chowk (453), Okhla (452) and Jahangirpuri — with dozens more above 400.
  • Visibility fell to about 50 metres at Palam and Safdarjung; officials reported more than 500 flight delays and at least 14 cancellations, and several trains were running late.
  • Meteorologists cited calm winds, high humidity, dense fog and a cold wave hindering dispersion, while DSS data identified vehicular emissions as the largest contributor at roughly 14–16%.
  • GRAP‑IV restrictions remained in force as Delhi announced stricter PUC enforcement and new e‑rickshaw rules; airport operators implemented low‑visibility procedures and passenger assistance teams.
