Delhi’s Air Quality Back to ‘Very Poor’ as Winds Stall, Hotspots Hit ‘Severe’

Forecasts warn weak winds and fog will keep pollution trapped through the weekend.

Overview

  • Delhi’s 24-hour AQI rose to 305 on Thursday and early Friday readings hovered around 329–331, placing the city firmly in the very poor band, CPCB data show.
  • Several monitoring sites recorded severe pollution on Friday morning, including Jahangirpuri at 405, Wazirpur at 397, and Anand Vihar near 395, with dense smog cutting visibility in multiple areas.
  • The Air Quality Early Warning System projects very poor conditions through at least December 13, as stagnant conditions and shallow to moderate fog limit dispersion; IMD notes feeble western disturbances and low wind speeds.
  • The Decision Support System attributes the largest local share to transport at roughly 16–17%, with additional load from industries and residential sources, and regional inflows from NCR districts such as Jhajjar and Rohtak.
  • Authorities have tightened curbs, including a ban with ₹5,000 fines for open garbage burning, prohibition of coal and firewood tandoors at eateries, and deployment of sprinklers and road washing to suppress dust.
