Overview

  • Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena unveiled the 10-foot Maa Yamuna statue at Nigambodh Ghat on August 11, placing the idol on a seven-foot pedestal oriented toward the Yamuna’s origin.
  • Weighing about 150 kg and crafted over three months from a granite and graphite resin composite, the statue depicts the goddess seated on a tortoise holding a water pot.
  • The unveiling reflects a broader DDA-led floodplain rejuvenation initiative that cleared encroachments, landscaped more than 1,000 acres and established biodiversity zones such as Asita, Baansera and Amrit Biodiversity Park.
  • The revitalised stretch now links to Vasudev Ghat via pedestrian and cycle paths, and DDA plans to add visitor kiosks and parking to promote public access.
  • Saxena said the installation honours the Yamuna as a living heritage and serves as a reminder to citizens to protect the river’s sanctity.
