Overview

  • A June 20 circular mandates that only children who have completed six years of age will be eligible for Class 1 entry in the 2026-27 academic session.
  • The foundational stage will include three years of pre-primary education—Nursery at age 3+, Lower KG at 4+ and Upper KG at 5+—in line with the NEP 2020’s 5+3+3+4 model.
  • The nomenclature for pre-primary classes remains flexible and may be revised as deemed necessary by the Directorate of Education.
  • All stakeholders, including teachers, parents, experts and the general public, can submit suggestions on implementation until July 10.
  • The change also aligns Delhi’s system with the RTE Act 2009’s guarantee of free and compulsory education from age 6 and is expected to yield long-term benefits despite short-term adjustments for schools and parents.
