Delhi to Microchip 1 Million Street Dogs as MCD Maps Ward-Level Feeding Zones

The capital turns to microchips with digital tracking to tighten rabies control.

Overview

  • Delhi announced microchipping for nearly 10 lakh street dogs over two years with UNDP support, paired with digital vaccination records and a citywide dog census.
  • Following a Delhi Animal Welfare Board meeting, the government moved to mandate pet-shop registration, set up monitoring committees and present a state rabies action plan before World Rabies Day.
  • Acting on the Supreme Court’s modified order, the MCD told zonal officers to identify three to four feeding points per ward within a week, keeping them away from high-traffic areas and residential entry points.
  • Uttar Pradesh directed local bodies to fix designated feeding spots, post notice boards, involve RWAs and activists, and form animal welfare committees to settle disputes and aid sterilisation drives.
  • Chandigarh proposed a ₹10,000 penalty for feeding outside designated areas and has listed about 60 feeding locations pending final notification of new bylaws, while Pune began mapping sites via data from regular feeders.
