Delhi to Add 150 Electric Buses Next Month

The delivery is meant to boost clean transit but depends on land approvals and charger installations before buses can enter service.

Overview

  • Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said Monday that 150 electric buses are ready and will be launched next month, though the exact date has not been finalised.
  • The transport department has formally requested land from the Delhi Development Authority and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at five sites — Tikri Kalan, Jaunti, Mungeshpur, Bakkarwala and Gazipur Mandi — and sought space from DMRC to expand Rithala depot.
  • Charger installation is under way at three additional depots, and five depots with a combined capacity of 768 buses are being developed under the central National Electric Bus Programme to support the growing fleet.
  • A larger scheme under PM E-Drive plans 32 more depots with capacity for about 5,510 buses, with vehicle deliveries and depot work scheduled in phases over the next two years so most capacity gains will be gradual.
  • If depot construction and inter-agency approvals keep pace, the rollout will increase service for city and nearby rural routes via new Daurala and Jhuljhuli depots; any delays in land or chargers will push back deployment timing.
