Delhi Targets December Opening for First Double‑Deck Metro–Road Flyover

Overview

• The Karawal Nagar double‑deck project, which the Delhi government said on Wednesday is 88% complete, is being built between Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura Metro stations and is scheduled to be operational by December 2026.
• The Expenditure Finance Committee chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved a revised project estimate of Rs 291 crore, up from the original Rs 220.10 crore, to cover remaining works and cost overruns.
• Technical progress reported in late July shows 74 of 80 deck slabs installed, 4,100 metres of 5,600 metres of crash barriers in place, and 14 of 18 expansion joints fitted, while outstanding tasks include six deck slabs, ramps, final road surfacing, painting and about 100 street poles.
• Separately, the Public Works Department has floated tenders for feasibility studies and DPRs for two new 5‑km elevated corridors and longer‑term elevated Ring Road options, hiring consultants at an estimated cost of about Rs 3 crore to assess traffic, drainage, trees and utility impacts.
• Officials say the integrated design—a three‑lane road carriageway above or alongside an elevated Metro on a 23‑metre‑wide deck with 140‑metre ramps—could shift 65–70% of through traffic to the flyover, cutting surface congestion if the remaining works meet the December schedule.
