Delhi Steps Up Anti-Froth Drive and Temporary Yamuna Ghats for Chhath

The push focuses on short-term froth suppression with temporary ghats under court limits on immersion.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inspected the river by boat from Palla to ITO on October 4 and directed agencies to be ready for the October 25–28 festival.
  • The Delhi Jal Board will spend about ₹24 lakh on foam arresters, static and mobile sprinklers, anti-foam agents, 10 power boats with divers, and a temporary water-quality lab near Okhla.
  • The Irrigation and Flood Control department has earmarked ₹50 lakh to build new ghats between the Wazirabad barrage and the Old Railway Bridge, adding fencing, lighting and hoardings.
  • Officials say 929 designated sites are planned citywide for rituals, with over 100 points identified along the Yamuna and additional locations at canals, drains and artificial ponds.
  • Immersion in the river remains prohibited by court orders as authorities link froth to untreated sewage, detergents, industrial effluents and decaying hyacinth, with structural changes at barrages under study.
