Delhi Starts Cleaning 6.85-Km Trunk Sewer to Ease West Delhi Overflows

The Rs 13 crore project will run about six months to remove years of silt buildup using bypass lines with advanced machinery.

Overview

  • Ashish Sood, Delhi’s urban development minister, inaugurated the cleanup on Wednesday between Jail Road and the Keshopur Sewage Treatment Plant.
  • Officials said the roughly 1.5-metre trunk had accumulated nearly 65% silt after years without proper maintenance, driving overflows in Virender Nagar, Shiv Nagar, Hari Nagar and Janakpuri.
  • The tendering is complete and crews are diverting sewage through temporary bypass lines while extracting compacted silt with specialized equipment.
  • Authorities expect completion in about six months, and the minister plans to return in ten days to review progress.
  • A separate 200-metre sewer is being laid beneath the District Centre metro station to bolster Janakpuri drainage, with damaged local lines to be replaced once the trunk is restored.
