Delhi Sets Up District Committees to Tackle Monsoon Waterlogging

The move hands district magistrates formal authority to run SOP-based preparedness and coordinate fast on-the-ground fixes.

Overview

  • The Delhi government constituted District-Level Coordination Committees in all 13 districts, an action ordered by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and announced on Tuesday.
  • Each committee will be chaired by the district magistrate with the additional district magistrate as member secretary and will include municipal engineers, PWD, I&FC, DJB, DDA and local civic officials.
  • Committees are tasked to carry out preventive maintenance such as desilting drains, cleaning bellmouths, inspecting vulnerable spots and deploying temporary pumps to reduce waterlogging.
  • Power distributors BSES and TPDDL plus district traffic police will be on the panels so agencies that manage electricity, roads and drains can resolve operational service disruptions quickly.
  • The next test is implementation: the order makes district coordination the main instrument for monsoon response, but effectiveness will depend on timely action, joint monitoring and problem resolution at the ground level.
